DECEMBER
Welcome to this December edition of The Locksmith Online
How do you get to be a locksmith? I live close to Walthamstow High Street which famously has the second longest street market in Europe and one of the stalls there used to be run by a key cutter who said he doubled by acting the part of a market trader in Eastenders, a tv programme.
I never watch Eastenders so I don't know if he really was the key cutter in the programme but I know that he cut keys and sold locks in Walthamstow High Street. I'm absolutely sure he was thoroughly competent in everything he did but the rest of us can not rely on a tv endorsement of our professional competence.
That's where essential training comes in. There is a natural human temptation to try to do things on the cheap, to find locksmith educational schemes that are quick and cheap, designed to get you through the exams that lead to those awards.
These schemes are certainly easy enough to find. They are all over the internet like a rash. You know the sort of thing: become a locksmith in three days, simply stump up £999 and your path to a high status career is assured...
But does it work? Well does it? I don't know but some of you probably do. The Locksmith is considering running an online survey to find out what your experiences of these courses are.
The survey would cover the qualifications obtained, the cost of the course, what you felt you learned and whether you would advise a newby to our fine industry to go on a similar course.
If we got enough responses to the survey the Locksmith would not hesitate to highlight any problems experienced, or any good accounts of your experience. We would list the course providers and offer a simple way to rate them according to the information you gave us.
But would you guys fill out the survey? Well would you?
If readers really would be interested in this service all you have to do is send an email to this address (info@keyzine.co.uk). That's it, just send me an email. If the Locksmith gets enough we will run the survey.
For those of you that will be attending the Totally Secure Exhibition in January next year, we would like to invite you to visit our stand and join us for a complementary glass of Champagne to celebrate our launch.
We look forward to meeting you soon.
Best Regards
Jonathan Brind

We've all heard the theory about how Lock Bumping works, but nobody has
seen it proven in practise. Not surprising really as it all happens
behind a lump of metal. The closest anyone has come to proving the
theory is Locksmiths in the USA where grease was used in a modified
cylinder and then displaced.

It has often been said that bumping is difficult to detect without the use of special equipment.
This document has been written to enable locksmiths who have to deal with these situations, and any of the authorities that have
an interest to determine with reasonable accuracy, if indeed a cylinder has been damaged due to bumping, using just the naked
eye, and a few common tools.
